Everybody needs a personal "status" page
Merlin Mann | Oct 19 2005
Lots of sites have status pages. I wish more people had them.
Yeah, status pages for people should be more popular, and I also wish they were a bit easier to make and maintain. It would be a nifty way to display information like:
I've long had a Lazy Web wish for a little perl script that could That way you could maintain a bunch of easy lists and the script does all the building and posting automagically. You could fake this with a blogging tool, but I like the idea of having it all updated in the background. Got a good personal status page? Seen one you liked? What would you post on yours? Have a fast trick for helping noobs make and post status points to the interweb? Care to pick up my Lazy Web gauntlet? 72 Comments

I have a simple status...Submitted by Will McElwain (not verified) on October 20, 2005 - 3:46pm.
I have a simple status image on my website, willmcelwain.com, that I did with PHP. The image src is a call to a php script that spits out an png image based on the query string. The script only supports 3 statuses though: :), :(, and :|. I'm sure I could make it more flexible if I wanted to, but it works just fine for me right now. The current one is http://www.willmcelwain.com/images/status.php?life=:)&job=:)&gf=:( , but you can play around with that query string if you want to create your own status image. I don't check referrers right now, so feel free to link to it on your own sites. E-mail me if you'd like the script (which I'm sure could be coded better). » POSTED IN:
