Open Thread: The "43 Folders" of health and fitness sites?
Merlin Mann | Feb 8 2006
Over the last six months or so, I've gotten a lot of requests via email from people looking for (yes, thanks, more than one person called it this) "the 43 Folders of (health|exercise|fitness) sites." Naturally I set my Google fu in motion, fully expecting to turn up dozens of excellent sites on how to stay motivated about workouts, how to eat properly, and how to psych (or "hack," if you prefer) yourself into straightening out, losing weight, and getting that fat ass in motion. Funny thing: I came up pretty thin -- and not in that good, healthy, slender kind of thin way. In at least three sittings of searching over the past few months, I just did not turn up more than a couple of independent sites that really blew me away. Really surprising, and maybe I was just looking in the wrong places. Like under a 12-pack of beer and a rib roast. BUT. I'm sure they're out there, and I can't think of smarter people to ask than you, so you tell me: what's your favorite website or blog about getting healthy? What are your favorite apps for tracking progress and watching a diet? Who's got the best "health hacks?" Post your faves in comments and help your geeky friends get as theoretically fit as they are theoretically organized. 95 Comments

When we belonged to the Stonestown YMCA, I loved to use Fitlinxx. Your local (participating/equipment-enabled) Y gives you a unique ID, and each time you do a workout, you login at a little touch screen. Then, as you use the equipment in the gym, including all the machines, treadmills, stair-climbers etc. you enter in your little number. On the cardio equipment, it “remembers” your time, heartrate, and calories burned, and on each of the machines it prompts you with your last performance and suggestions for the current workout, then it records how you did this time around. At the end of the workout, you go back to the touchscreen and logout. Easy. This alone is pretty slick since it lets you concentrate on the workout (minus the v.1 annoyance of per-machine code entry) and then have your progress tracked (along with weight etc.) over time automatically. If you have a trainer at the Y, he or she can check in on your progress and even leave you notes, suggestions, and encouragement. But, it gets even cooler because you can use your same account via their web site to look at your stats and even add non-Y workouts, walks, runs, and other exercise via the web page. Hm. Kind of makes me want to rejoin now. :) It’s not exactly the kind of blog thing I was really looking for, but I’ve been enjoying other peoples’ non-blog fitness links and wanted to add my fave. » POSTED IN:
