About six months ago, I read this excellent MSNBC interview about shaving (via the wiki’s shaving page), and I ended up experimenting with bits of what it suggested in my own periodic attempts at grooming. My results to date:

Agreed with everything except the razor itself. Safety razor is the best thing I've used so far, and I've used at least a handful of different kinds of razors. More blades = faster clogging. The trick to the safety razor is to use your offhand to pull the skin tight in the opposite direction you are shaving. So if you are shaving downward, pull that part of your face upward so the skin is tight. It's tough to do on your chin, but pretty easy everywhere else. It also helps the hair stand up better if your lather has started to deflate a little, allowing for a closer shave. Using this method, I can do half my face without rinsing off my safety razor. One side gets used up, and just flip it over and continue. It took me a few shaves to get this down, but my grandfather gave me some good advice! He took an immediate interest when I told him I was switching to the "old style". Admittedly, I do not let my facial hair get much past the stubble stage for the most part, so I don't have anything heavy to deal with usually. » POSTED IN:
