Vox Pop: What's your "Mac Whine?"

We've started a new feature over on MacBreak Weekly that I really hope becomes a regular thing: "_Mac Whines_!"

Yeah, sure, I'm an unapologetic Apple fanboy (I, mean duh), but some stuff about my Mac experience makes me crazy. Have you got a beef with your Mac or OS X you want to shout from the shiny counter of the "Genius" Bar? Yeah, me too.

I'll open with:

  • inexplicable iCal "snooze" options (per MBW 30 -- which, incidentally, may also be my favorite MacBreak Weekly to date)
  • near-hangs whenever a mounted network volume is no longer available
  • no way to (temporarily) enable password-free user switching
  • The Finder. The goddamned Finder.

What's your Mac Whine?

@Tom: TextEdit can save plain text. You can set that in the preferences

@all keyboard junkies: I bound the go-to-menu-bar function to ALT + SPACE. It is much faster than the predefined CTRL + F2 and I actually like it more than the windows pendant (as the letters are aiming at different menu points depending on the app and sometimes different menu entries get the same letter).

@the no-dragging-to-hidden-apps-in-the-dock-problem: Start dragging, hit ALT + TAB, drag on the app you want the stuff to be (try this on a windows system ;-) now my whinings (mostly duplicates of already mentioned):

  • disconnected network drives paralysing the system
  • top-bottom extending selections in Finder iTunes and elsewhere (I can't imagine how this could be considered a good idea in the first place - it just feels plain wrong)
  • I'd love a keyboard way to extend selections non-consecutive (as command clicking with the mouse). You can do that in windows with holding ctrl and hitting space for each item you'd like to add to a selection
  • and the one and only point windows is actually better than OS X: The WINDOWS + D shortcut which hides all windows and gives focus to the desktop. I can hide windows in OS X with Exposee but I'm not on the desktop (I have an applescript workaround for that but it should be build in - btw: Quicksilver rocks!)

Mostly minor flaws (isn't that what whining's about?). Other than that I'm quite happy with the mac ways.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
