Ten plus Two Times Five
hernick | Nov 3 2005
Today, I read Procrastination hack: ?(10+2)*5?. I liked the concept! But syncing myself to a alarm? Urgh. Painful stuff. I hate buzzers. So I invoked the power of Open Source: I fired up Hydrogen, a drum machine. I laid down 12 minutes of beats; the beats synchronise you to the hack. I call it Ten Plus Two - Version One. Download it. Play it in a loop. The beat track itself is a hack. And if you people like it, I'll make a better one. Hell, I'll make a better one anyway. Why? It works for me! Discuss. 19 Comments

Westminster Chimes & More for os X... applescript and cron..Submitted by a11en on March 1, 2006 - 10:57am.
Hi guys, I've got a post over at my blog (please excuse the mess, as I'm not used to visitors :o I'll have to do less venting there. ;) he he). But, my post discusses the creation of Westminster Chimes for os X by way of applescripts, a small scriptable program called playsound which is fast and low-memory, and Cron the built in system scheduler. I'm sure there's a different solution, but this one is highly configurable. You can also do ship's bells, which I haven't implemented yet, or any other variant you want. Cron is capable of running tasks within certain hours and minutes, and I believe at logins as well as possibly at idle states. So, it's generally quite useful. Please note: users of 10.3x may need to *leave* the cron items in the list while adding and subtrating their own items in cron- in 10.4.x, cron no longer handled the system clean-up tasks, etc. and was primarily left unused. My blog is here: Searching4Arcadia My best to everyone here, and hope you're doing well! Let me know if you have luck with this approach, if you need help, don't hesitate to ask, I'll gladly help clear up my quick and dirty instructions or provide specific help, my time allowing. ps- for those of you wanting to put iCal calendars down to 4x6 cards, I also have discussed that on the blog a bit further down. pps- some slight updates- 1) Regarding the "front-focus" issue I briefly mentioned here before- I've fixed the problem- you need to change the application you make from your script to be a background-application. I'll post this solution and more on my blog very soon. 2) Cron may have a slight "fudge" factor on the chime... I'm checking into this... it appears sometimes it's off for some reason ( a number of minutes late for instance)... this doesn't affect me very much, but, it would be nice if this didn't happen... I'm checking this as well... possibly some different flags in Cron need to be set for that one. » POSTED IN:
