handling interruptions
cassienyc | Aug 22 2006
one thing that has seemed to impede my progress with GTD is interruptions - phone calls, people dropping by, or even getting caught by coworkers on the way back from the bathroom, etc. some of the time i am able to simply turn off my phone or shut my office door, but other times it is unavoidable. so, for example, i'll set aside a hour for work, and then smack in the middle of that time someone will come bother me for 10-15 minutes or so, and then i'll find i only have 15 minutes left which is usually not enough time for me to finish what i need to have finished. it's maddening, and the end result is that i end up tacking on an hour or two to my work day just to be able to get my work done. anyone have any advice? how do *you* deal with interruptions? 4 Comments

I'm always interested in hearing how people deal with interruptions as well. Mainly because I'm having a terrible time getting away from them in my office. We are a small company, still fairly young, with really really cramped quarters. Cubicle hell... so there is no office door to shut. And with the small quarters you can hear someone across the office if they are either having a loud phone conversation or just being loud. In my department (4 people) we've adopted a flag method. I read about this recently but cannot for the life of me find the link. Each of us has a flag that we literally mount on top of one of our cubicle walls if we absolutely, positively must not be disturbed. That worked fairly well for about two weeks, but some people are already starting to ignore it. That being said, my department is the IT department. If someone has a down system or something else they deem critical... they don't give a damn about the flags. » POSTED IN:
