Making the switch?
Stew | Apr 25 2006
For some years now, I've been thinking of switching from Windows to a Mac, problem is, the family has been unwilling to dive in the last several times I've had to buy a new machine. From what I've read here on the Mac's handling of GTD, I think I may finally have an excuse Here's primarily what I'm looking for: A powerbook or equivalent able to run OS X fairly if not very well. Must be able to network. Not new due to cost considerations, but not ancient. I figure anything within the last few years should adequately work. My question is, does anyone know of any sites that may provide reviews and/or sell used machines? I've tried the typical ebay/craigslist searches without much luck. Thanks! 9 Comments

Depending on your price range, I would suggest a Titanium Powerbook as the low end. Get at least a G4 because Tiger is really slow in G3's and it's likely that Leopard won't support G3 at all. Of course, XPostFacto is forever forcing legacy machines to run the latest version of OS X, but that's more hassle than you want as a switcher. For pre-owned, reconditioned Macs, you should check out powermax.com. They have pretty good deals usually. If you haven't checked the Apple Refurb list, check there because they have pretty good deals as well. If you are any way eligible for educational discount (or know someone who is...) that's a really great option. Best of luck and welcome to the light. ;) FWIW, my wife had a G3 Tangerine iBook all through grad school and it was a really great machine for basics. It was only 300 MHz, but it ran Jaguar like a dream. » POSTED IN:
