iTunes copying songs twice.

I imported my songs awhile ago from a pc to my new mac. However, I just realized that I could potentially save a lot of space: I have seemingly all of my music in my /music folder -- in addition to that, I seem to have all my music in /music/itunes/itunes music/ folder, except its divided by albums. If I deleted ALL of the music in just my /music folder, would that effect anything my music collection/itunes? Or does my mac somehow require them to be in both places? Thanks! 2 Comments

The main reason iTunes copies everything in its library to ~/Music/iTunes/ is so that it can keep track of what has been added without worrying about the original locations of all your files. Once you add something to your library, it's safe to delete the originals. However, iTunes does change files' metadata when it imports them, so if you may want to keep some of the originals around (for instance, media purchased outside of iTunes, like Amazon MP3s). » POSTED IN:
