Open Thread: How are you using Excel?
Merlin Mann | Aug 22 2006
Yesterday, I mentioned I'd been talking with someone who's looking at interesting things people are doing with Microsoft Excel. I talked to her again yesterday, and with her official okey-dokey, I'll virtually introduce Tralee Pearce (*waves*), a reporter from Toronto's Globe & Mail whom you might remember from a very swell article about the Hipster PDA. So, by request -- and to help Tralee with fleshing out her fun-sounding article -- I hope you all will jump in here: What kind of cool, novel, and non-obvious stuff are you doing with Excel? What's the wildest, most obsessive, most nerdy thing you ever saw someone do with our favorite spreadsheet program? 119 Comments

I developed automated regression testing...Submitted by Jagan (not verified) on August 22, 2006 - 6:37am.
I developed automated regression testing system using excel, windows scripting, autoit, iopus. The recording of the 500 pages performed in iopus and all fields/links/clicks were captured in excel and a master excel sheet controls which subset of the 500 pages were re-run. for each test the output was captured in Excel. -- In our company we converted a excel based system to web based for a Aircraft engine manufacturer. The excel system was a beast. It was a complete lease costing analysis system running out of excel. each page contained the history of the engines being leased out and across a 12 sheet calculation the system obtained almost 100 inputs per sheet to arrive at the optimal price for leasing out the engines. so many inputs, calculations, graphs were present and converting them over and testing that the system was correctly captured was a nightmare. Each sheet/cell contained such complex formula that at one point maintaining it became PIA, so they converted it to web. » POSTED IN:
