Open Thread: Mac Mind Mapping, and how you use it
Merlin Mann | Sep 17 2006
I've recently revived my interest in doing mind mapping as a way to capture ideas and plan out projects. Back in the day, I'd use Inspiration (which registration regrettably died a few years ago), and in more recent times I've played with free apps like My Mind and FreeMind, as well as tested more costly apps like NovaMind and MindManager. If you also like to mind map, I'm curious to hear which of these you and your Mac are using, how you're using it, and what made you choose one app over another. Got a preference? Prefer regular old paper and markers? Using lots of images in your mind maps? Which pay app is most worth the dough, and why? And for folks who are new to mind mapping, here's a few links to get you started:

I've been using Inspiration since back in the System 7 days. Back then, there weren't many other alternatives, but not mind-mapping has gone mainstream, as the above points out. The advantages to Inspiration are the flexibility of the two views (mind-mapping and outlining) and the ability to dump a file in Word format to pass on to others. I generally either mind-map/outline or outline every article and book I write, and use the Word format to send to editors. I find that it is a very easy to use tool for any type of text production. However, I'm starting to get tired of its hokey display and especially the poor font display. I didn't buy the last upgrade, since nothing of note changed, and would like to find a program that is a bit more "elegant". Yes, content is king, but display does count. » POSTED IN:
