Vox Pop: What's your "Mac Whine?"
Merlin Mann | Feb 28 2007
We've started a new feature over on MacBreak Weekly that I really hope becomes a regular thing: "_Mac Whines_!" Yeah, sure, I'm an unapologetic Apple fanboy (I, mean duh), but some stuff about my Mac experience makes me crazy. My main MacWhine™ is the Dock. It's always in the way. You can't quit it. You can't make it stay hidden. There are much better dock-like options (e.g. DragThing) out there. Let me get the dock out of the way and use them if I want to. Second place goes to mysterious S.P.O.D. pauses. It seems like there are some serious thread-lock issues buried in OS X. I have a dual core machine, with plenty of free cycles, yet I get the Spinning Pizza Of Death several times a day, lasting several seconds at a time. I can usually switch to another application and do something there, but it breaks my primary focus. Third place goes to brain-dead handling of network volumes. There was no excuse for the bad behavior in 2001, much less in 2007. Slow to mount, a minor disaster if not unmounted before changing networks. » POSTED IN:
